제품의 생성주기에 따른 기업의 활동은 크게 제품개발, 제품생산, 판매및 고객지원으로 나눌수 있다. 일찍 부터 주장되어온 CIM(Computer Integrated Manufacturing)은 제품 생산을 지원하는 MRP(Manufacturing Resource Planning), ERP(Enterprise Resource Planning)에서 제품 개발에 필요한 정보를 관리하는 PDM(Product Data Management) 시스템 그리고 현재에는 고객과 협력 업체를 관리하는 SCM(Supply Chain Management), CRM(Customer Relationship Management) 시스템등이 광범위한 관심을 받고 있다. 추후 CIM의 개념의 실현은 더욱 가속화될 것으로 예측되며, 다음과 같은 범위에서의 개발이 주요 이슈로 떠오를 전망이다.

그러므로 이 장에서는 제품 생성주기를 지원하기 위한 기업의 활동에 대한 프로세스의 개략을 소개하고 다음 장에서는 이를 지원하는 정보 시스템을 소개한다.
