PDM Class #10: Grand Demo of PDM Main Functions
in place November 7, 2000, lasted modified December 8, 2000

Product Development Process and Engineering Change Process

Given part master and engineering BOM of the simple Ball Point Pen, we will generate and interface necessary engineering data for the product development. We should follow the simplified product development and engineering change processes (fig 1 and 2).

Participants and Their Output

Participate in the product development as a role assigned in the beginning of the class. You should build the engineering data specified in the table 1 and 2 to use for your own usages and other participants'.

Table 1. The role and output in the SPDP (Underlined items in Output field will be discussed.)

Process Role Description Output
Product Planning Marketing Marketing should survey user requirements and build product concept. The result will be translated to the design as design directions. Simultaneously, the configuration should be build to satisfy the various user requirements 1) User Requirements and QFD to Product Design
2) Product Concept Configuration Design
Design Design team should decide the reference point for detailed design such as package size, main dimensions and weight. Various constraints including regulations in domestic and overseas should be considered. Main Specifications for Product
Design Design Design team should provide detailed design specifications: engineering information, dimension and feature of parts, for the rest of product development processes and procedures. In addition, the product structure considering the configuration should be prepared. 1) Part Master
2) Drawings
3) Product Structure (E-BOM)
4) Proto for Testing
Customer Support CS team should review the E-BOM and plan the part for CS purpose. 1) CS BOM
2) CS Part Master
Manufacturing Manufacturing team should review the E-BOM and plan the part for manufacturing purpose. Manufacturing BOM(MBOM)
Supplier Manufacturing team should review the E-BOM and plan the part for manufacturing purpose. Engineering Information of Supplied Parts (including their drawings)
Prepare Production Manufacturing Manufacturing build manufacturing process, and review and validate it with pilot products. In addition the required resources should be prepared according to the result of the MRP. 1) Production Plan
2) Material Resource Planning
3) Purchasing
4) Pilot for production test
CS CS should recommend the items and amount of the initial stock of spare parts to dealers, and publish the part catalogue book or electronic media. 1) Dealer Stock Recommendations
2) Technical Publishing
Supplier Supplier review the production plan and prepare own MRP. Synchronized MRP for supplied parts
Marketing Marketing team calculate the cost of the product and decide the price considering options and market conditions Product Cost

Table 2. The role and output in the SECP

Process Role Description Output
Problem Identification Customer Support The customer support can request the EC of products to improve the satisfaction of customers (of cause, designer, marketing or manufacturing can request ECs. ECR
Design Design should response the EC and report the related part and product structure. Initial Technical Report
Research and Change Design Design should review the related part and product structure and if necessary should test current and candidate solutions. These activities should be recorded. The EC proposed should be circulated to the related departments and approved. Finally design order the EC approved. 1) Technical Report
2) ECO
3) EC History
Manufacturing Manufacturing should review the EC proposal and approve it if necessary. EC Approval
Customer Support CS should review the EC proposal and approve it if necessary. EC Approval
EC Implementation Design Design should specify the planned effectivity on its E-BOM EBOM with Specified Effectivity
Manufacturing Manufacturing should review and change M-BOM and change the MRP and following process and procedure. New M-BOM
Customer Support Customer support review and change CS-BOM and update the part catalogue. 1) Updated CS Part Master and CS BOM

2) New Edition of Technical Publication
